In 1972-73, while serving with the U.S. Army as a Cryptographic Equipment and Mode V Terminal Computer repairman, I was a member of the 550th Signal   Company located at the Can Tho Army Airfield in the Mekong Delta area of Vietnam.

As many of us old timers do, seek out our old Units, with the aid of the Internet it was not difficult to find many of the Army units. When I located the 39th Signal Battalion, now located in Europe where it was born, I noticed there appeared to be some variation in the 39th Insignia style from the Insignia I remembered in 1972/73.

Not knowing if the Insignia had officially been changed I took it upon myself to do some research to find out if it had changed.

With the gracious help from a very nice lady working with The Institute of Heraldry at Ft. Belvoir, Va. I not only found the information I was seeking on the 39th Insignia I found information on the 39th Signal Battalion Shield, the new Crest and Coat of Arms.

The purpose of the following pages are to document and display the results of research accomplished to resolve questions of a possible change to the 39th Signal Battalion Insignia with the help of The Institute of Heraldry.

It is my hope that the information and artwork presented here will be of a use and a benefit to the past and present 39th Signal Battalion personnel and especially the present and future 39th Signal Battalion Webmasters.

A word of Thanks! to Rick Stayner for the perimeter photo above. Rick and I were in the 550th Signal Company and lived in the same hooch at Can Tho Army Airfield.
Rick stated the picture is from the backside of the airfield at Can Tho base and the wooden post, in the wire area, had Claymores attached to them when he took the photo.
