Although I was stationed at the air base commcenter, I remember visiting Eakin Compound twice. Once was to deliver something (I rode shotgun with an E-6) and we stayed for lunch. It amazed me that the mess hall offered a choice of entrees. Reminded me of the air force up at Tan Son Nhut, where they had all the amenities.
The second time I visited Eakin Compound, a bunch of guys from the Battalion played a touring bunch of NBA basketball players. I got to play the last 30 seconds and scored a layup before crashing into a pile of sandbags.
Obviously, I was not much of a basketball player. Back at the airbase, we played almost every day after getting off the night shift. There was a basket near the infirmary, by the commcenter and there was a court between the rows of barracks in the housing area.
