I was in Can Tho From 18Apr68 until around Nov/Dec 68 with D co. 69th Engineers. At that time we moved out to an army built sand area near Binh Tuy Naval base. As I understood the info I got, the 69th built quite a bit of the Can Tho air base buildings, revetments for the helicopters, etc. While I was there, I drove a 5 ton dump truck (D-65) and we were building 2 story barracks, and an Officers club. We also built the hoochs and bunkers out at the Binh Tuy area before we moved out there. I was standing guard duty in the 69th's pre-fab area one night in the first part of Jan 69 when the airfield got hit by sappers. They shot the guys in the truck driving around to change the guard with the M-60 from the bunker. Apparently the GI's on guard duty had fallen asleep and got their throats slit. It went crazy, rounds and tracers, green and red, were coming from all over the place. They melted three Chinooks down to scrap (I saw them) and damaged a bunch of other helicopters, slicks and cobras.
