The way I remember the sapper attack is: They arrived in an ambulance and tried to get in the Vietnamese Gate next to Paddy Control and were turned away. They drove up to the next gate and were waved right through.
I heard that some GI coming off duty shot a couple of them. Don't know if that's true or not. I do know there were some embarassed people around the next day.
