Don't remember if it was July or not but: If the bank building is where I remember, and I do know the building I'm thinking of had a US Medical Team there. The street it was on also had the Province Chiefs house, the prison, also had the villa our lower grade airman lived in and the house our officers lived in.
That night they walked mortars down that street, among other targets. Hit the bank, but I can't remember any damage. Dropped a couple of rounds on a single story "hotel", killed some vietnamese civilians. Hit the wall around our airman's villa, scared the hell out of everyone. Also dropped a couple of rounds in the prison court yard and the Province Chiefs yard.
They also got a couple of rounds just outside the command post and the civilian hospital.
If I remember right it was something over 100 mortar rounds.
After that night they kept the lights on the Tropo tower in the middle of town turned off, claimed it help the VC aim.
I was working in Paddy Control that night. Spooky rolled on target within seconds of the first round hitting. Just happened to be in that part of his orbit when the firing started. Also happened to have two fire-fly teams out of Soc Trang airborne when they hit. Don't recall any Americans being hurt. I think most of the damage was to the hospital.
