I was a pilot with the 156th from July '67 to July '68. I recall once, serving as OD at the airfield security unit's command bunker and going out with a very experienced NCO to check on some ARVN positions way out beyond the runway.

I lived in the 156th hotel downtown. I remember one night some sappers came to place a charge at our front door but just then a bunch of Mohawk pilots were leaving. They hit the entrance to the "Hotel Hites" across the street, killing their guard.

Tet was an incredible experience. We never missed a day of flying missions, but the drive to the airfield was the greatest hazard we faced at that time.
