OH what fun! I like mnay other some what liked guard duty as we also could sleep till noon. But one night was a real fun one not the attack in Jan 68 but earlier that year. The night I felt like john wayne!! OK this is it guys. we were at the south end of the field at the right of the runway there was a tower and a bunker behind us was the art unit. At soem where around 2200 hrs I half asleep i just finished my watch when I heard that damned whoosh woosh and bam . after crapping all over myself and digging out the newbie from the hole he dug we looked for where the hell it cam from ! I called up to the tower and ased this guy if he say it " saw aht he said the damned mortor " Is that what that was? Aw Je*** C**** you mean that you didn't see the tube flash? No he said I am coming up told the guy in the bunker to cover me ( I don't know why I did this as he was digging deeper) climbed the tower and looked towrds the old Montin Yard camp then I saw it..Flash woooosh bam ! I had my fix and didn't know either to s*** or go blind but did call TOC and avdise then of the location and they quickly turned on the siren. And then the whole damed base lite up with flares and mortors coming in on us. I called TOC againa nd said we need some hellp here ! : Can't do that right now but help is on it's way. I about twenty minutes you could hear the familier sound of a cobra comin to us that's when I laid out the M-60 Stight for the VC playing head games. The Cobra can right over the top of the tower and bunker and let loose with the minigun and a couple rockets taht ended that dance ! Still remebr that night as one round landed right near my bunker and I can still hear that slaping sound of scrapnel hitting it. Lost part of my hearin in the left ear still rings after all these years and getting worse...Anyone rember this ordeal that night??
