Good to see someone else from the unit post here. Let me expand on the Airfield Commander's sudden separation from the Army. He was a passed over LTC, desperateto get promoted. Somehow he'd gotten it into his head that we were up to something nefarious in that quanset hut. so he and his SGM, who should have damn well known better, show up unannounced and try to get into Ops. Hell, I had the clearance and I wasn't allowed in there. No "need to know". After PFC Ceranski offered to shoot him he comes tearing over to the Company HQ across the street and yells at Major Greene for 20 minutes. I was in the next office and heard the whole thing. (As loud as he was, I thinik the guys on the Flight Line heard him too). Greene waits him out and continues to sign paperwork (Okay I peeked in, alright?) When this guy runs out of air, Greene, who was West Point and RA to the core simply looks up and says, "Sir you were told that building was off limits and no concern of yours. You've violated our security and drawn attention to the facility. Now, do I tell MACV, or do you?" Two weeks later he was gone and so was his SGM. It takes real talent to get kicked out of the Army in the middle of a war. Of course this wasn't his only screw-up, or even his worse (he sprayed the whole base with Agent Orange because he heard it was a dandy weed killer), but it was , thank God, his last.
