Roy;

I arrived at the Can Tho airfield in Oct. '66 aboard an army Caribou. I was seated last on the strap bench right at the open tail boom. It was a bit un-nerving for me to absorb the meaning of the pilot's emergency escape instructions to us that concluded with, "Then, 5 seconds before impact I am going to ring this bell..."

You are absolutely correct. In '66 the airfield was very, very small, mostly centered around the Special Forces compound to the front gate. There was huge growth in '67, including two-story tropical, open air barracks. The place was still growing as I left in May '68.
