I pulled my share of it. I remember one night the OD didn't show for inspection so we pulled assignments out of a helmut. Sure enough I drew the worst--the frickin ammo dump. For obvious reasons the dump was placed toward the end of the runway and away from everything else. Late that night a Jeep pulls up as I'm leaning against a crate of 2.75 rockets cupping a cigarette. It's a dark night but I watch the guy exit the vehicle and walk toward me. I had been in country for several months and I wasn't impressed--and I presume this guy is a seargent type. He walks up to me and says "What are you going to do if we get mortared tonight"? I flipped a cigarette on the ground stomped it out, and said, "I'll tell you exactly what I'm going to do, I'm going to DiDiMau this motherfucker". At that moment a flare activated some distance off behind me, but by that flickering yellow light I can see I'm nose to nose with a Captain. He locked my leather together and chewed me out good, {it took me several minutes to get my ass unpuckered}, but I've been laughing about that ever since. Have a good one--Al (Gen John Pope) RTT chief 67 to Apr 68.
