weapons were a joke. we were issued m-16s, m-79s, and machine guns when on gaurd duty. but you had better never fire one of them. even when i went from vinlong to cantho with secret documents we were told that we that we had never better use the weapons. most of us carried personal weapons that we bought from people rotating out of country. i had 2 m-1 carbines and a foot locker full of ammo that i bought for $15.00 from a lt that was leaving. they couldnt trace these so if something happened you used your own. many times the locals saw these and would leave you alone as they knew these werent traceable. i remember george reid had a thompson, others had 38s and anything else that you could get ahold of.
