In '65 Colonel Moore may have been considered a great commander. In '69 he would have been fragged. After 4 years of the the same mistakes and the same BS from Washinton, MACV, John Wayne, and all the other hyperpatriotic idiots that weren't in the shit with us, things were viewed a bit differently. What I did admire about the book (and to a leser extent, the movie) was the sense of taking care of the guys next to you, so you could all survive (hopefully). And there weren't a lot of E-1 shitburners aound in '65. They sure didn't help matters, morale-wise.
