You are correct, you do not need to prove exposure, only show that you served "in-country." But, the Vietnam Service Medal or Vietnam Campaign Medal do not verify in-country service for VA purposes. A purple heart or combat infantry badge shown on a DD-214 will verify "in-country" service.
