I can relate to alot of stuff you had in your message. I lived in Can Tho until our USAF intelligence detachment had to move on to Binh Thuy Air Base in late Oct 70. We lived and worked in the Hotel #3 compound that also housed the USO.

What I can relate to and can remember vividly:

1. That horrible stench (especially when it was really hot and humid...which it almost always was) from a combination of raw sewage, gas fumes from those little Lambras, the crap they used to cook on the street, etc.

2. Getting my haircut/getting a massage/getting a little bit more than that/ across the street from the Hotel #3 compound.

3. I remember the smell of those fried green bananas....and I remember those old ladies chewing the beetle nut.

4. I remember being on the top floor of Hotel #3 at night and watching the "light show"....streams of red tracers from a variety of sources.....Puff the Magic Dragon, Cobra gunships, etc.

5. I remember the crummy food at the USO where I had to eat most of my meals.

6. I remember the courier runs every day I had to make from Can Tho to various military locations and up the "highway" to Can Tho Army Airfield and on to Binh Thuy Air Base....and back again.

7. The Catholic orphanage in Can Tho.

I could go on and on.

Thanks for sharing your memories.
