I agree with your first sentence....the foul air of Vietnam.....more specifically, the foul air of Ben Xe Moi and Can Tho. I still remember that lousy, putrid, rancid...whatever....smell. My strongest two memory joggers.....the music on AFVN radio and the friggin' smell of Can Tho. In fact, I can't believe I actually ate in some of those Can Tho restaurants. I must have been nuts. I could have died from food poisoning.
