I was stationed at Vung Tau (June 1968 - June 1969), 8th Aerial Port, Detachment 1 (airfreight specialist). I worked at the airport base terminal proceesing guys coming in for the in town R&R center. What I remember most is the rusted hulk of a ship off the beach, those fantastic beaches, and great local food. I met several Vietnamese folks who opened up restaurants who letme know that that ship that washed up on the beach was finally dismantled and taken away. I would love to go back someday and just hang out on the beach with that fantastic pineapple treat, and just remember how lucky I was to get a great station. All in all, compared to the rest of the country, I remember we got rocketed by 122mm's a few times to let us know a war was on and witnessed some strange stuff at those downtown bars, but it was indeed a great place to be.
