I was an instructor at Ft Gordon for a month (after finishing Avionics course) when the Tet '68 Offensive started. Several hundred of us were sent to RVN on 90 days TDY. I was sent to Soc Trang, IV Corps, and worked with the 257th Signal Detachment; most of the TDY-guys were back stateside in less than 60 days. Instead, I chose to stay at Soc Trang for a full year's tour, so I extended. A bunch of my Ft Gordon buddies went to Can Tho; one, Doug Eklund from Puyallup, WA, ran the new tower Avionics trailer at Can Tho Airfield. No matter who did what or for how long, we were/are all proud of our service. One of my Sig Det buddies, Drew Mortenson, at Soc Trang extended his tour at the end of his year so that he could go back to Philly (?) for a week or two, where he bought tools, etc., to bring back to Soc Trang, things that we couldn't get from the Army. We were all 100% committed to our buddies and our jobs. If I had been a Marine, I'd say "Semper Fi."--Spec4 Pat Dwyer, Soc Trang, Tet '68-'69
